Dr Watts’ main research interests are the epidemiology, diagnosis, classification and treatment of systemic vasculitis – including giant cell arteritis, granulomatosus with polyangiitis (Wegener’s granulomatosis), microscopic polyangiitis, Churg Strauss syndrome and Takayasu arteritis. For 20 years he has run the NORVAS vasculitis epidemiology study in Norfolk.

He is a lead investigator for the DCVAS project, developing new classification systems for vasculitis. Other interests include the education of patients with rare complex autoimmune conditions, working with vasculitis UK and the vasculitis clinical research consortium.

He runs the RECIPROCATE project funded by the National Institute for Health Research investigating the clinical and cost effectiveness of community based rheumatology clinics.
